The Department of Physics is one among the oldest departments of this college offering Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral degree programs in Physics. Since its inception, department targets the holistic development of the students by imparting the best scientific knowledge and values, instilling a research aptitude along with fostering various co-curricular and extracurricular activities.
Department of physics commenced its functioning in 1964. Prof. K C Chacko (1964-1976) was the first faculty member in Physics. In 1965 Prof. Job Joseph (1965-1998), joined the Dept. The U.G. course in Physics was started in 1967. Prof. M P Mathew (1967-1987), Prof. V J Sebastian (1967- 1998), Prof. T P Paul (1968- 1994), and Fr. Aloysius Puthiaparampil (1969- 1982) were the other faculty members who utilized their potentials for molding the department into one among the best during initial stages of development. Adding strength to the dept, Fr. K C Chandy CMI (1976-1982), Prof P T Kurian (1978-2007) and Prof. K J Mathai (1979-2008), Prof. Johnny Thomas (1980-2013), Dr. T G Gopinathan (1980-2012), Prof. M A Roy (1981-2003), Dr. P S Regupathi (1981-2013) , Dr. Sebastian Mathew (1981-2015) , Prof. Joby Joseph (1982-2015), Prof. Dominic Sebastian(1982-2016) and Prof. Joseph Sebastian(1982-2016) joined as faculty members during the course of time.
The Post Graduate course in Physics was instituted in 1995. Physics department scaled it heights under the dynamic leaderships of Prof. K C Chacko, Prof Job Joseph, Prof. P T Kurian, Prof K J Mathai, Prof. Johnny Thomas, Dr Sebastian Mathew and Prof. Dominic Sebastian during consecutive periods. The department was recognized as a research centre under Mahatma Gandhi University in 2009. Prof. Johnny Thomas turned into the Principal of the college during 2011-2012.
At present the department is pursuing its vibrant endeavor to accomplish its great dreams under the leadership of Dr. Jini Thomas with six permanent faculty members and two guest faculty. All the faculty are actively engaged in research and academic activities that may uplift the college to its great pinnacles.
