Introduction
The Department of Zoology focuses on the holistic development of an individual attained through academic excellence, professional competence, personal interpersonal and societal skills. They study of zoology provides an excellent plank to launch, in this direction. The faculty nurtures its students to reach their goals, through creative and empathetic involvement in society. The delinking or pre degree courses from colleges, abolition of quota system for degree holders in medical seats, entrance exams for professional courses, mushrooming of self-financing streams and globalization has necessitated the reshaping of the department so as to develop right attitudes and proper skills in students, and enlighten the relevance of zoology in the society at large.
Since its inspection in 1967, Zoology as a subsidiary subject for the UG course in Botany, the department has made large strides. It now conducts UG course in Zoology (Regular stream since 1979). Prof. Sebastian Joseph led the department in its infancy stages, along with his colleague, Prof. P.C. Joseph. The UG course was started under the Kerala University, but later was affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University. This course also has a new Biochemistry as its subsidiary option, which is rare. Earlier, the Department had seven faculty and three lab assistants, but was whittled down to five teachers and two non teaching due to delinking of the pre degree courses. With the advent of B.A. Psychology course in the college in 1993 with Physiology as subsidiary option, our faculty members began to teach it, along with the other subsidiary option, for B.Sc. Botany.
