History

The Economics Department of K E College may be considered as the embodiment of the dreams and visions of Blessed Kuriakose Elias Chavara, the heavenly patron of this institution who regarded education as the most crucial input for socio- economic development. The faculty of economics has always believed that education is power and it converts human beings into human resources for development.  

The Department of Economics was the first department (1967) that was started in this college. Rev. Fr. Nestor C.M.I, the eminent educationalist and the great scholar and later the principle of this college was the first head of the Department of Economics. In 1981, M.A courses in Economics were introduced and it was the first postgraduate course that was introduced in the history of K.E College. At this juncture Prof. K. M. Mathew, the great Ghandhian Economist and famous social activist was the Head of the Department. Department was elevated asa Research Centre of the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam in 2013. Within a short time this department has earned laudable reputation as one of the most prestigious academic centre of learning Economics in Kerala.

  • To create potential researchers who can enrich the nation through policy prescriptions.
  • To prepare well equipped economists who can tackle new emerging imperatives in economics
