Following the introduction of the B.Sc. Mathematics in 1980 and M.A. Economics in 1981, Mr. Joy Joseph M.Sc. Statistics and Mr. K. J. Mathai M.Sc. Statistics, joined the Department on 24-10-1980 and 19-01-1982. Degree course in Psychology, with Statistics and Psychology as subsidiaries was started during the academic year 1993-94 and Fr. Joseph O.C. C M I, was appointed as a Lecturer in Statistics on 16-01-1995. The combined department of mathematics and statistics was bifurcated on 01-04-1996 and then Mr K.J Mathai appointed as the Head of the Department of Statistics and after 33 years of service he retired on 31-03-2014. Fr. (Dr.) Joseph Ozhukayil CMI took over as the Head of the Department of Statistics on April 1, 2014. Following the retirement of Fr. (Dr.) Joseph Ozhukayil CMI, Dr. Smitha S was appointed as the Head of the Department of Statistics on 1st April, 2017. Three of the five faculty members are Ph.D. holders and two are pursuing Ph.D. The department’s faculty members have presented numerous papers at both national and international conferences.
The Department aims at an in-depth study of the theory of Statistics and its practical applications. The students are given practical training as far as possible. Since Statistics embraces all branches of study, including Science, Arts and Commerce special emphasis is made on the inter-disciplinary nature of statistics. The Department is proud of its past and looks forward to realizing its aspirations for the future. It has been in forefront of education, moulding young men and women into talented, disciplined, enthusiastic and hardworking statisticians of India and abroad.
The Statistics Association provides a platform for students to engage in various extracurricular activities, hosting annual competitions on National Statistics Day, as well as organizing seminars and workshops every year.
Our students have achieved notable success in placements, with several securing positions in top companies like Wipro, SIB, PPD, and Cognizant through campus recruitment programs over the past five years. Additionally, one student was placed in India Post in 2020. Furthermore, one alumnus successfully submitted her PhD thesis, and two students were selected for PhD programs at IIT Indore and CUSAT in 2021. Many of our alumni hold prestigious positions both in India and abroad.
Since 2018, our department has been conducting alternate-year certificate courses on “R Software” and “Data Processing using Microsoft Excel”, each 30 hours long. Led by resource persons Capt. Jobin Varghese and Mr. Tijo Mathews, these courses cover essential topics, enabling students to understand the software concepts and perform data analysis. These courses serve as a gateway to a career in Data Science.
As a part of the extension activity programme, to improve the skill in solving Mathematical problems, the Department of Statistics conducted a coaching on basic Mathematics for the students of St. Ephrem’s Higher Secondary School, Mannanam with participation from our M.Sc. Statistics (Applied) students. At the end of the academic year, we conducted an examination based on the topics we covered. Students were greatly benefited from this programme.
In 2023, the department achieved a significant milestone when it was upgraded to a Research Centre. In the same year, the Data Science Studio was launched for further enhancing the department’s research and academic capabilities. Dr. Smitha S, Dr. Sindhu E S, Dr. Dhannya P Joseph, and Dr. Jikcey Isac from Assumption College, Changanassery have been approved as research guides.
The department’s faculty hold key positions, with Dr. Smitha S serves as Chairperson of the UG Board of Studies in Statistics, with Dr. Sindhu E S as a member. Dr. Dhannya P Joseph is a member of the PG Board of Studies in Statistics. Capt. Jobin Varghese P is a DCDC member at Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam and NCC Liaison Officer to M G University since 2013.
